MISSION STATEMENT

Promoting independence and access in our communities for persons with disabilities and Deaf people.

Welcome to Stavros!

On this website you will find information about resources, laws and important issues that impact your ability to remain independent. By staying informed and contacting your state (or just western MA) legislators and federal legislators about important issues, you help preserve your rights and the rights of others. Please consider getting involved by making a donation so that our work can further enhance the lives of folks with disabilities in Western Massachusetts.

Call your Legislators!

Things can only change if our elected officials--local, state or national--know how you feel! Find out all you need to know to be informed to Vote Smart and start changing the world!

Celebrate ADA Anniversary at Stavros!

Celebrate the 18th anniversary of the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA)on July 24th 2008, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at our Amherst office at 210 Old Farm Road in Amherst, MA. The ADA was made into law in 1990. Its intent is to provide people with disabilities basic civil rights and to increase opportunities in areas such as, employment, fair housing, and access to all public entities.

We'd like to hear from you how the ADA has impacted your life. We will videotape people's responses and place this recording in a time capsule to be opened in 10 years. Stavros would also like to share with you the ways in which the independent living movement and Stavros continue to fight for your right to self-determination and to enjoy all that society has offer.

Featured Stavros Programs

The Home Sweet Home Program benefits many of the folks in the areas we serve who are in need of wheelchair ramps and durable medical equipment (DME) to safely access their homes and community. In just one year--from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008--Home Sweet Home was able to to complete an amazing 68 ramps at consumer's homes! During the same year, our equipment recycling program placed over 130 pieces of DME with consumers. The ramp program is a coordinated effort of donations of materials, funds, and volunteers to build modular ramp units and then install the ramp at the slated locations. We are looking for retired, disabled or just plain interested builders/contractors to share their expertise (call Lois Brown at extension 240).
