Stavros and DCR's Universal Access Program have collaborated to offer accessible recreation opportunities to get you outside and enjoying nature: Outdoor Access provides recreation activities designed for people with disabilities. Programs happen all year long in state parks across the state.

Spring Accessible Recreation Fair

The Department of Conservation and Recreation's (DCR) Universal Access Program (UAP) will offer a free fun-filled day of celebrating Accessible Outdoor Recreation available for individuals, families and friends of people with disabilities. Activities will include a cycling fair with an assortment of accessible cycles available for use, recreation activity demonstrations, stretching for health, face painting, interpretive programs, a D.J., snacks and more! Join us rain or shine and enjoy the accessible recreation fair , spray pool and playground. Enjoy the camaraderie while learning about DCR's inclusive, accessible programs and resources available to people of all abilities around the state. The event will take place at Artesani Park in Brighton for 10AM-3PM.

Letterboxing and more!

Join Outdoor Access and DCR for some fun in the beautiful Spring sun! DCR is offering free accessible letterboxing on the Norottuck Rail Trail in Amherst. This program is for individuals with disabilities, their families, and friends and will be held in light rain or shine, inclement weather will be cause for cancellation. This event administered by All Out Adventures involves; Going out on the trail in search of hidden "treasure!" Following clues to locate letterboxes that contain hand-carved stamps. Learning to use GPS to locate geocaches that contain swappable items. Also, participants will learn about DCR's new Park Passport Program. Assistive equipment and teamwork help people of all abilities access hiking trails and locate caches at a leisurely pace.

When: Friday May 1st, 2009. 11am to 3pm

Where: Norwottuck Rail Trail, Amherst. Starting from the parking area on Station Road.

Directions: From Route 91 north, take exit 19 (Amherst/Northampton). At bottom of ramp go straight ahead at stoplight. Parking lot is first driveway on right. Preregistration is required. Call 413-527-8980

As well as the Amherst Letterboxing event there will be ones held at the D.A.R. State Forest, in Goshen and at Mt. Sugarloaf State Reservation, in Deerfield. These will be held May 13th 11am-3pm and June 9th 2-6pm respectively.

In addition to letterboxing, the Universal Access Program (UAP) will offer birding, hiking and fishing in the Spring of 2009. For program dates and more information visit the UAP Events page of the DCR website.

MA DCR's Universal Access Program

The Massachusetts Department of Recreation and Conservation has a Universal Access program (UAP). The UAP is dedicated to providing outdoor recreation opportunities in Massachusetts State parks for visitors of all abilities. Accessibility to our State Parks is achieved through site improvements, specialized adaptive recreation equipment, and accessible recreation programs.
