Disability Awareness Month

Disability Awareness Month

Welcome to Disability Awareness Month.

It’s a little well known fact but October is Disability Awareness Month. It’s not as obvious as Black History Month, the Women’s Movement, and others nevertheless the disability movement does have a history and major pieces of legislation emphasizing the civil rights of people with disabilities. It didn’t begin with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Unfortunately disability movements have not been taught in school so it’s not surprising that our school-age kids take for granted laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) demanding school integration for children with disabilities or the requirements for providing Reasonable Accommodations for school-age children on 504 plans. The same laws that allow disabled students access to their classrooms are the same laws that are forgotten.

To learn more about this rich disability rights movement ask your local school system to teach their students more about this important topic, visit here.
