Goodbye to our Digital Equity Grant
Goodbye to our Digital Equity Grant

For the past couple of years, the IL Department has been helping consumers with their technology needs through a grant from Baystate. Thanks to the foresight of our CEO, Angelina Ramirez, and staff who recognized an opportunity to meet the needs of our community, we have been able to help countless individuals access technology. The need largely stemmed from COVID-19, which highlighted the digital divide that exists among the people we serve. While Zoom and telehealth created greater access to healthcare and services, many became further isolated due to a lack of internet access, affordability, or basic training. In this fast-paced tech world, there are many who do not have the tools they need or do not know how to use them. This program, and all of those who carried the work forward, improved the lives of so many. There is not enough room to share every story, but here are a few examples:
“One participant was working toward completing a degree but had only been able to access classes on an outdated device. Through this program they received a laptop, giving them the ability to use online platforms more effectively and stay on track with their coursework.”
“Another individual with vision loss discovered how to use accessibility features on their television and phone. With a little training, they were able to watch programs independently and navigate their phone more easily.”
“In one case, step-by-step in-person practice helped a community member learn to confidently use a laptop. With patience and guidance, they went from feeling completely lost to independently using the technology for their daily needs.”
Recently, one of our Community Support Workers stepped into the role of Digital Equity Mentor. Today is the last day of this grant, but we want to thank them for all of the wonderful work they did. Even though the grant is ending, our staff will continue to help people with their technology needs because of the knowledge gained, resources built, and connections made through this program.
